So much of the world today is focused on chaos and negativity that the media has focused on “bad people doing bad things.” And in a world that often rewards charisma, power, and success, it’s easy to overlook the quieter but more meaningful markers of goodness in people.

But what makes someone a truly good person — and how can we recognize them?

Psychologists and social scientists have studied the traits and behaviors that consistently define morally grounded, trustworthy individuals — or someone we would regard as a good person. Here are some key characteristics and signs, rooted in research, that indicate a person is not just nice, but truly good.
